FORGET SETBACKS
Football players are often taught to have a short memory. If a cornerback gets beaten deep for a big play or is called for pass interference, he must move on and prepare for the next play or series. A Linebacker who overruns a play, allowing a tailback to cutback and scamper down the field into the end zone cannot continue to dwell on that mistake. He must quickly learn from his mistake, then put it behind him. Otherwise, he loses his usefulness to the team.
How do you think it affects us when we constantly dwell on past defeats? Well, when a football player does that, he gets into what some call a “funk” or what others call being “snakebit.” They become like––please forgive me if you’re a fan of these teams––the Arizona Cardinals or Cincinnati Bengals of the nineties. These are franchises that have been losing for so long that it has become a part of their nature. It can be extremely difficult to break out of that mindset of defeat.
If I had to pick one sport as a favorite, it would have to be Arena Football. The game is high scoring, the pace is breakneck, and with walls surrounding the playing field, there is nowhere to hide.
