About the Author

Dave Piper was born in Hartford, Conn. in 1940. He still remembers the blackouts and sirens during WWII. Even that was an adventure. During childhood, he enjoyed farm-life in northeastern Conn. After graduation from Watkinson Prep School in Hartford, he earned his B.A. in Psychology at Lycoming College in Pa. in 1964. His college days at Lycoming were packed with several grand adventures. In 1965 he placed nationally in several Olympic canoeing events. That same year Dave was awarded a full fellowship for a masters program in Special Education at Southern Conn. State College and for several years taught the developmentally disabled.

In 1977 Dave left teaching and started work in nuclear submarine construction at Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Conn. and in 1986 earned an M.A. in Industrial Organizational Psychology at the University of New Haven. The company transferred him to upstate New York where he, his wife, and five children started sheep farming on the side. After a massive company lay-off, he, his wife and five children moved to Asheville, NC where he manages an office for Easter Seals UCP in Asheville.
