“Just what in hell are you talking about?” Don demanded, still refusing to move. He also was aware that the agent had used the words against your son.
Merry, who was standing right beside him, pulled at his sleeve to calm him down. She then walked calmly to the phone, dialed 911 and indicated to them that there was a serious problem that required immediate police and medical attention. She knew that the local television station and newspaper monitored all such calls and might be at their home even before the emergency crews arrived.
“That was not necessary,” the federal agent growled, obviously upset that they would call for help.
“And you, young man, are going to get all the publicity that I can shine on this outrage that you are trying to do here,” Merry said firmly.
Real fire there! Don thought, proud of his wife.
“Now, young fellow, let’s try to talk some sense right here on the front porch, Don said.
He literally pushed the young man away from the door.
“We can start by your telling me what our son John is accused of, and let’s try to be a little more specific.”
“I am not permitted to discuss an investigation,” the agent said flatly.
“Well, in that case, I am about to disobey a court order and not allow you to enter our house,” Don snapped. “We just got back from
Off in the distance, they could hear the emergency sirens indicating that within a minute or two, there would be a lot of people around. Several neighbors were already openly staring at the strange spectacle that was going on with their old neighbor. Next door, young Alex Henderson was already snapping pictures with his digital camera.
“Charges have been made against John Clinger; he is accused of industrial espionage.”
“Be more specific, sir,” Don demanded.
“We believe that he and his partner have used inside information to harm several American businesses.”
“You guys haven’t even arrested the ENRON bandits yet, and you are here to make arrests on the suspicion that my son has been involved in some sort of shady deals.”
Just then an ambulance, a police car and television wagon pulled in front of the house. Merry went out to greet them. She said loudly enough for everyone to hear, “These FBI men have come here with a warrant to search our house, but haven’t made any specific charges or given real reasons to conduct such a search. I would like you to televise the whole thing.”
The chief agent was now really angry at this turn of events.
“You are forbidden to do such a thing,” he said to the cameraman who was already coming up the front walk behind Merry.
Speaking directly to the cameraman and to a couple emergency people, “I just invited these people into our house, and I don’t believe that the government can stop me from inviting people into my own home,” Merry said and smiled.
