Introduction
Within the last twenty years our nation has drastically declined in its moral strength. Obviously, the condition of moral degeneration is directly connected with the immoral and unethical decisions people make. Each day mankind is challenged to make difficult decisions that affect their relationships, finances and careers. Confronted with this constant, even the strongest of men and women periodically experience moments of weakness and require help. In knowing this constant to be true, this book inquires: Where are the voices of those that can help men and women make the proper choices? Where are the words of encouragement? (Periodically, everyone needs to be encouraged.) Where are those that have experienced what many people are going through? What moral words of wisdom can they share to solidify the weak and broken hearted ‘s confidence? Is there someone we can turn to, or is there an ultimate source that can lead to personal empowerment? Every now and then we all need moral strengthening.
What a privilege it is for me to reveal through this book the voices of those that are committed to sharing their experiences and dedicated to offering words of moral strengthening. It is also an honor that I not only teach Biblical principles of morals and ethics but also reveal why there is a need for individuals, families, communities, and nations to morally strengthen one another.
Section I
The first section of “A Cry For Ethical And Moral Strength” shares with the reader stories collected from some parishioners of Laurel Hill UCC and stories from persons of the Tidewater region that I have befriended over the years. Their stories are personal accounts of dark and challenging moments in their lives. Each story captures a critical time when they were confronted and had to make the crucial decision to stay strong by either doing what was morally and ethically right despite their emotions and negative perceptions regardless of the outside influences and social impact or by just waiting patiently for moral strengthening from a supernatural God. The writers are people that are witnesses to how others can experience extreme darkness in their lives and be faced with making the most difficult decision yet still emerge virtuous and with moral fortitude. They offer their story as a testimony to you, the readers, that you may be encouraged and strengthened. They have dared to talk about their darkness so that others can be confident even during times of uncertainty.
Section II
Section two of “A Cry For Ethical And Moral Strength” serves to highlight factors regarding how principles of morality should influence the lives of men and women. It addresses the nation’s moral degeneration and advocates that the Creator of all things and all people would not ask or require men and women to live moral and ethical lives without providing the mean by which they can accomplish His command. He has supplied humanity with an unchangeable, unwavering and unshakable document. That eternal document is the Bible. It contains foundational principles for living a virtuous life.
Section III
The third section addresses a profound philosophy that is indicative to the notions or thoughts of most men and women and applies it to the topic of homosexuality. A Greek philosopher by the name of Thales is noted for one of the best-known statements in history. He stated that, “All things are made of water.” The reason his statement is recorded as a historical importance is it not only required a daring mind to conceive a proposition containing such a general idea, but also it took gall to ascribe his philosophy to the term “all” when attempting to confine all things into certain parameters. One proposition that consistently appears to be justified by the facts of our everyday experience is that all things cannot be restricted to a single definition; various principles must be integrated for clarity and a better understanding of how things are interrelated. When addressing homosexuality many people central philosophy is similar to Thales’. They only see life one way. They see life as people being created male or female and they must conduct their behavior within the assigned parameters. However, multiplicity and variety are the obvious facts about this imperfect everyday world. Subsequently, society, the judicial branch of government, and the religious community are at odds with regards to inquiries of morality and the ethics of human sexuality.
This final section is devoted to one of the most controversial subjects of this cultural era. Homosexuality has overwhelmingly impacted faith-based communities and has intensely influenced many facades of life. As men and women search for truth by questioning the ethics and the dilemma of morality, I submit to the reader writings from reputable authors that have extensively researched the concept of sexuality. Their analytical findings advocate diverse interpretations concerning moral principles of Christian character.
