FROM START UNTIL
When you’re an infant, just starting out,
You are catered to by others,
When your diapers’ plagued by flood not drought,
You can always count on your mother.
As months pass by, you learn a thing or two,
How to rollover, creep and crawl,
When walking becomes the thing to do,
If you should trip, in the floor you sprawl.
Getting your first tooth is such big news,
Soon after, you said your first word,
The potty is a challenging toy to use,
The thought of life without a bottle is absolutely absurd.
When you’re two years old, and see that,
Discovery is everything you live for,
“No” is a word heard all to often at,
The times when you’re throwing things on the floor.
You go to daycare, meet new children and,
Find some of them, not to be well trained,
They run around with dirty, grimy hands,
You think their parents must be insane.
You have a new authority figure there,
But she’s not like your mom,
So many children, she’s pulling out her hair,
She can’t keep you safe, from all hurt and harm.
From daycare straight through kindergarten,
Everything you did was cute,
But first grade troubles get no pardons,
Now you get a spanking and punishment to boot.
During grade school, things seemed almost easy,
In every class, you were the star,
Time went so fast, it made you queasy,
In junior high, things really got bizarre.
During teenage years, you go through changes,
Puberty holds lots to bruises and bumps,
You and your new body seem like strangers,
Your acne’s so bad, it looks like mumps.
Weird things happen, for no good reason,
You handle each problem as it comes,
You experience emotional changes, like the seasons,
Sometimes so much so, you just get numb.
Of course your parents don’t understand,
They never have and they never will,
They never listen to your demands,
How could they possibly know how you feel?
Yes, puberty was hell, but you survived,
You came through it unscathed,
You finished school and you’re still alive,
Now it’s the world you’re out to save.
Thinking of college and leaving home,
Somewhere out there your destiny awaits,
Looking toward the future, the globe is yours to roam,
It’s all yours, after you graduate.
Your degree in hand, you are now ready,
For whatever they throw at you,
In your field, you’re confident and steady,
You’re no stranger to things different and new.
The world’s your oyster, but be careful,
How you manage to crack open its shell,
Always be self-reliant and be prayerful,
Because some days are heaven, others seem like hell.
