Dollar Nut Pancakes
.It was cold October morning in the deep woods of New Hampshire when Cosmo and J climbed out of their home in the hollow of the big old oak tree.The forest was alive with the scurrying of squirrels and the enchanting murmuring song of the mourning doves
It was a wonderful day for two young raccoons. “It is mother’s birthday today. We should do something special for her,” said Cosmo.
“Why don’t we go down to the pond and catch a lot of crawfish for her birthday present?” J suggested.
“No,” said Cosmo, “Momma eats those everyday. We need to do something really special for her. After all, it’s Mom’s birthday. Why don’t we make a very special breakfast for Mom and we can have a surprise birthday party.”
“What a great idea,” said J. “How about getting all our friends together and tell them our plan. We can invite Mr. & Mrs. Bear, Sammy and Sonny the squirrels, and Bernie Blackbird. We can even ask Uncle Roscoe to do his magic tricks. You know how he gets sugar cubes from Farmer Jones, and when Momma washes them they disappear!”
“Wow! Breakfast is going to be fun,” they both said. So the two young raccoons, Cosmo and J, decided to make Mother Raccoons pancakes for her birthday breakfast.
“Bernie the blackbird knows where all the good berries are,” said J. “Mr. & Mrs. Bear can bring honey from their favorite beehive. Sammy and Sonny squirrel can go to the tree and bring back enough walnuts for all the pancakes we need to make.”
