Section 1-Chapter 5
The Orb of the Mystical Quadrangle
Fascinated by the glowing light, Lostalot walks warily into the cave room. Only then does he see the sword, shield and breastplate lying on the ground nearby. Carefully, he lifts the sword. The weight feels right in his hand. Next he tries on the breastplate. It feels right. Now, he lifts the shield. Holding it in place he tries a few swings with the sword.
“Boy,” he thinks out loud, “this is just what I need to be a proper knight.”
Suddenly, something against the wall catches his eye. There are four niches carved into the wall of the cave room. In each niche is a statue of a warrior.
Casually, Lostalot walks around the room looking closely at each warrior. Slowly his attention refocuses on the glowing orb.
“This is strange,” says Lostalot to himself. “What is this place?”
Looking down, he spies a stone tablet with writing on it. Moving closer, he leans down to examine the stone tablet.
Aloud, he reads, “This is the orb of the Mystical Quadrangle. He who enters, Beware! For to take the armor and secure the orb, one must be pure of heart and strong of limb. Prepare to defend.”
“Wonder what that means?” Lostalot asked himself. “Not that it matters. It’s probably just some old myth stuff.”
Leaning down, he picks up the orb. Immediately, there is movement from the niches in the wall. The statues are alive. Each warrior moves into the cave room and takes a fighting stance.
“Uh oh,” says Lostalot.

C. J. McRae is an eleven-year-old home school student. He was first recognized for his writing in 2004 when he was published in the Dallas Morning News Kids Day Contest as one of the finalists. He is an award-winning photographer with an emphasis on nature. He published his first book, Birds in My Backyard, featuring his own photography in 2002. C.J. competes in Open Division photography competitions against adult amateur photographers. He has won multiple awards for his nature photography. His interest in mythology stems from his classroom work in third and fourth grades. He loves skateboarding and is fascinated by the idea of time travel. His book, Time Travels with Joey Wheeler, allows him to combine his love and his fascination into an exciting adventure series for children.
