We spent a lot of carefree days playing out in the woods in the summer months.
The only thing was that we had to watch out for Henry!
Henry was an old rooster that came to live on our property. I don’t recall if we brought him to live with us or if he just showed up, but he was one mean son-of-a-buck.
I think that he just hated kids. He would chase us around like this was his house and we better leave.
The reason why he seems to stick so vividly in my mind, is because the stupid creature got my butt beat one time.
It was my job to make sure that the stupid bird didn’t attack my brother Paul seeing that he was so small. He couldn’t get away from the chicken fast enough and Henry would try to attack him.
He would just catch sight of one of us and start chasing us down.
Ironic huh, big white chicken chasing around a couple of kids. Usually its the other way around, kids chasing around small white chickens for a little fun.
Anyway, Paul and I had been playing outside and mom had given me explicit instructions about watching Paul so that Henry wouldn’t attack him.
We played and played.
I always made sure that I knew where the bird was at all times. I was watching him while he was watching us.
You could see the craziness in his eyes.
Turning his head and looking at you with one eye and then turning his head and looking at you with the other eye.
He was a very big chicken.
I bet he weighed in at probably a good fifteen to eighteen pounds. He was a huge chicken!
After a little while he just kind of disappeared from sight, which was just fine with me because I needed to go to the outhouse anyway.
I headed to the outhouse and kept turning around and looking over my shoulder to where Paul was playing and then over to the place where I had last seen psycho bird. Still no sight of him, so I quickly slid into the outhouse and proceeded to take care of my business.
When I was almost finished and getting ready to pull my pants back up, I was pushed into hurrying faster by the shouts of Paul. He was screaming at the top of his lungs telling the bird to get off of him.
I shoved open the door to the outhouse to see Henry with one foot on my brothers shoulder and the other on Paul’s head. Henry, with wings flapping in the air, was pecking Paul on the top of his head.
Paul was trying to brush the bird off but it was no use, Henry had a good grip on his clothes with his feet.

About the Book
This book by Chris Bagley is about his troubled childhood with his abusive mother. He did not have many chances growing up, and decided that he wants the whole world to know what it was like to grow up in his shoes. The book starts as far back as he can remember; back when he was a small boy and he was adopted along with his younger sister. Little did he know what kind of torturous childhood lay in front of him with his new abusive mother. He starts with himself being a small boy and tells of the many places that he has lived, brief encounters with relatives and all the hardships that he had to sort through and deal with along the way. His own grandmother, whom he loved very much, knew the hardships that he had to deal with, and for some reason could not step in and helps him out of it. He tells of running away from home, getting into fights at school, being put in the place of a man and forced to do work many men do not even do. Eventually, his life, leading to his having to stand up for his sister who finally returns home from her own bout of child abuse from a woman that had adopted her from their mother. The hardships only made him stronger, and he thanks God that he is still alive to tell the story.
About the Author
Mr. Bagley is a graduate of a small High School on Blue Eye Missouri. Circumstances beyond his control prevented him from going on to college, but he held high point averages in English throughout his school years. He has since worked several different jobs including a job with the Government which he still holds. He has always had a love for writing, and has always wanted to write a novel, but his work and his three boys take up a lot of his time and he can only write in his spare time. Someday he hopes to be able to write full time and finish all of his half-finished fiction books. This is his first and most important book. It has taken him three years to complete, and has a lot of his heart put into it. You can almost say that he had been driven to write this book, it is a part of him that he wants to share with the rest of the world. Look for more to come from this great Author, as he has a great imagination.
