The teams had been chosen. Now colors were picked, and paintball guns were handed out. Shermy saw the array of weapons.
“What’s this?” He asked as they handed him one of them.
“It’s called a marker.” They told him. “That’s what you use to shoot the paintballs!” Poor Shermy had a flashback, remembering the night all those militants had rampaged, shooting off guns and slashing with knives through the village where his missionary family worked. He was frightened! In fact, he panicked.
“No way,” he shouted and disappeared. In his haste to get away from the paint-guns, Shermy had forgotten that he wasn’t supposed to disappear if anyone was watching.
The rest of the news were taken by surprise by Shermy’s obvious terror. None of them had ever faced a sharp knife, much less a deadly gun or anybody using one.
Shermy had faced the real guns and knives and had lost! He had not forgotten the horror. Fear had taken over. He went straight into the arms of the King. Only empty space was left where he had been standing.
Captain Hugh’s son Hal understood Shermy and what had happened, just as the whirring of some kind of camera innards brought him up short.
Now where have I heard that sound before, Hal wondered. The photographer was familiar. Oh yeah! He was that guy they had lost in whitewater. He’d fallen off the raft trying to get a picture for his paper. “Not you again!”
Eddie had arrived too late to be chosen for a team but not too late to snap the pictures he’d waited for so long. He was a student like the rest of the boys, but he also interned on his school paper. Everything he had done up to now was to try catching the news in the act of disappearing, something the others fought the King about because of jealousy.
Now Eddie was “odd man” in the game. He grabbed an extra paint gun and took off to see if Shermy would reappear on the other side of the hay bales.
Hal saw that Eddie was after Shermy and the chase was on. Thunk, thunk, thunk—ka-thunk! The balls of paint sounded off. “You’re goin’ down dude!”

Norma Jean Waterhouse writes adventure stories for chapter-book readers. Her books promote learning to walk in a close relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
With her husband Harry, she has written and voiced promotions for colleges, universities and Christian radio stations—in the form of a cookbook for one—and many commercials aired on secular radio.
She has also written and voiced recruitment promos for missions urging people of all ages to write and find out where in the world they could put themselves in God’s hands to serve.
In promoting Christian authors, she voiced a book for one, bringing his stories to life about children in other lands and missionary kids around the world.
The Waterhouses, married for 55 years, are retired after careers that included radio broadcasting and journalism and teaching college classes and children with special needs. They have three children and thirteen grandchildren.
