The party started as soon as the door closed. The smooth rhythm of the white powder vibrated inside the round brown container. It swayed and swirled and slid, creating little openings as it went around. Each movement caused a cloud to form above the surface. It lay there light and loose without a care. It was no longer being pushed together to become something hard. It moved on its own accord. It floated, and hovered when it danced, to find its own place until he was ready for it. Finally it stopped moving and everything was silent. The time was coming near. The dance had gone on too long.
The drawer slowly opened. A round spoon poked its head out. “He’s gone!,” it shouted to the others. “We can get out! We can go! We can play! We don’t have to twirl around in that white stuff and get banged against a bowl anymore.” He jumped down to the floor and did a little jig.

About the Book
As the story unfolds a spoon, kitchen knife and spatula are dancing around like little children playing by themselves when Mom and Dad have left the house. It seems to be a fantasy at first but gains significance when the character, Mr. Hobbs, dreams of going to the beach, a departure from his usual way of life, just as his cooking tools had departed from their own ways in his absence. It is as though the flour that has been the principal ingredient in his life of baking cakes and cookies has succeeded in doing something to help him right away. He is given hope, which will help him to achieve a degree of independence.
