Later when I knocked on the door at #31A, Miss Jones’ niece, Miss Mary, opened the door and asked me in. Miss Alice was sitting in her easy chair watching the evening news.
“Sit down, Sock,” she said. “I just want to thank you for coming to my rescue this afternoon. “Sock, you are a hero. Yes siree, to me you are a real Hero!”
“I was glad to do whatever I could to help.”
Then we talked. Miss Jones asked me about my school work, how my Mom was and Miss Mary brought me a glass of Koolade.
Finally, I said, “I’m glad that you’re alright. I’ll check on you tomorrow. Maybe I can come and keep you company while Miss Mary is at work.”
Then I said, “Goodnight” and left.
As I walked back home, I remembered that Camille said, “You’re too little to help anyone.” But, it was me who opened that window. I called the janitor and the fire department came to help Miss Alice Jones.
I couldn’t help but throw back my shoulders and put a big smile on my face and say, “I’m a Hero! I really am a Hero! Man, you know what I’m saying? I think to me being a Hero really is the bomb!”
