Additionally, we do not honestly evaluate our reasons for entering into a marital relationship. We have adopted a “just do it” approach to mate selection. Let love take care of the rest. The heartbrokers tell us to let love take its course. What exactly is this “course?” No one, not even the heartbrokers, have been able to explain, clearly, sensibly and in detail, what the course of love is. What does it mean? Does love actually have a course? Where did this course come from? Can we replicate and realistically apply this course? Why hasn’t this course been effective for everyone who followed it?
This encompasses the central problem I have with the heartbrokers. The heartbrokers always seem to know the answers to all of our relationship problems. However, when it comes to the actual application of their solutions and the actual proof of their effectiveness, the heartbrokers come up short. The heartbrokers are not required to support their position with logical statistics. They offer solutions in the form of metaphors and clichés. However, I am not interested in hearing the cliché, “love will work everything out all right,” when I ask for help with specific problems in my relationship. I need to know exactly how love will work things out and exactly how I can apply these concepts so that I may duplicate it. Having a clear definition of the “work” of love is essential.
