Prophecy and speaking in tongues are expressions of spiritual inspiration. Prophecy comes forth when God inspires people to speak to the circumstances impacting man. Speaking in tongues occurs when the baptism of the Holy Spirit encourages a verbal outpouring to witness the presence of God with man. Both are important spiritual gifts that Paul encouraged the church to experience by properly prioritizing their respective operations.
1 Corinthians 14 1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.
1 Corinthians 14 39Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
1 Corinthians 14 40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
Paul did not set prophecy and speaking in tongues against each other in 1 Corinthian 14. The work of God was too important to do such a thing. Instead, Paul encouraged the church to keep God’s gifts in order so as to benefit the church and all of mankind.
There really is no need for debates on the subject of prophecy or speaking in tongues. Salvation is too important to squander time on such frivolous undertakings. Prophecy is a gift from God. Speaking in tongues is also a gift from God.
1 Corinthians 14 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.
