DRY BONES
“Oh ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord . . . Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live . . . and ye shall know that I am the Lord”—Ex. 37: 4-6 (KJV)
There they sit—a bunch of dry bones, breathing but not living, hearing but not listening, seeing but not envisioning anything. They’re bored with school, bored with their families, bored with themselves, and bored with you. They have no idea what they want to do with their lives, nor do they care. They’re here to pass time until the day is over. Then what? “I dunno’.”
“What do you want to do?” you wonder silently. “Flip hamburgers the rest of your life?” Then you wonder if they have the energy to do that.
If the truth were to be told, we probably looked the same way to our teachers. Come on, admit it. When we were that age, we too were bored with school, bored with our families, and bored with ourselves. When someone asked us what we wanted to do with our lives, most of us replied, “I dunno’.”
We see what is in front of us. Sometimes it is not a pretty sight. We see young people without goals or motivation. Ah, but God sees something else. He sees purpose! Sitting at those desks, totally unaware that God has a specific plan for their lives, are preachers, Sunday school teachers, worship leaders, prayer intercessors, missionaries, writers, theologians, and evangelists.
You see dry bones; God sees an army!

About the Book
Do you want to make a difference this year? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of your students, the staff, the administration, and in the building environment of your school? Composed of forty weekly entries, Making a Difference, by Rebecca Harper, will take you through one full school year of prayer for your district. Rather than praying for students only, the author pursues other avenues that are just as important in the effectiveness of a good school.
Every week you will find a different topic to pray over, such as your classroom, the superintendent, standardized testing, colleagues, and of course, students. Along with each entry, you will receive suggestions that will enable you to actually take some kind of action in reaching your goal of making a difference. One week you may want to take a prayer walk around the building. Another week you might send a card of appreciation to one of the secretaries. Finally, for those who like to keep journals, each week’s entry also contains a page to write down thoughts, prayers, and ideas.
If you are a Christian teaching in a public school, rest assured you are not there by accident. You have a special calling for your life. You see, God is using you to touch many people, not just the students who will pass through your classroom, but the entire school district. You know that “loser” who has no future? He will if you lift him up in prayer. How about the new teacher? She just needs a little encouragement.
