The power of a loving husband

The woman is still God’s little helper in bringing the man into an oneness with his Creator and as a “helpmeet” in all the transactional affairs of his life. As God is our helper, so the dutiful wife is to her husband. (This particular descriptive exercise however will be explored further in the next chapter). But as we look at the oneness of marriage, this is what the wise man Solomon says about the strength of two people in harmonious unity:

“Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble. And on a cold night, two under the same blanket can gain warmth from each other. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).

The latter part of the Scripture is even more challenging as God is saying to couples – ‘Look it is not just two in this exercise but three.’ The Lord Jesus Christ is our Helper. Where there are two, it’s actually three, because He is there picking up the pieces. What a reassurance!

Husbands, marriage is God’s property. He made the institution in Eden. He performed the first wedding ceremony and gave away the first bride which makes Him the Only Author capable of rendering a verdict on how this process ought to be conducted. If He tells us to “love our wives”, then what choice do we have? We can ill-afford to open the door to the enemy of our souls. So why not work for the final goal?

Jesus loves His Church. He knows the power of a loving husband because that is what He is to His Church. As Prophet, Priest and King He serves the entire body faithfully. Our earthly service within the divine construct of family life is similar.

We show our love in the role as prophet in our homes by our godly lives, lived out in consecrated service, by teaching the precepts of God’s Word, and through the edification of the Holy Spirit we are able to lead our wives and children along the pathway to sanctification.

As the priest, we take the lead in offering the daily supplications, petitions and sacrifices to God through genuine heartfelt prayer, repentance and atonement for our families. From our righteous example, our wives and children learn the value of solemnity, worship and praise.

As the king of the home, our families understand that godly government, discipline and delegation works from the head downward in a systematic order of accountability where each unit responds with favor, agreement and love. This headship is a moral imperative that involves a completely selfless love. The love which Jesus bears for the Church.

God’s most precious gift to a man is his wife. A husband is to love his wife. A love which never demands to have things done its own way. A love which does not fail to give unflinchingly every time. It is a love which caters to your wife’s needs unreservedly.
