From Chapter 3: The Twins’ Rapiers…
“Now,” Julien said, holding his rapier straight up, “before any match, you always salute your opponent by holding the blade straight up and down. The handgrip is centered over your heart and the blade in line with your nose.”
Julien then moved to a sidewise crouch, showing only the thinnest part of his body to
“The extended off arm balances the moves you make with the sword,” Julien explained, and then showed the strokes. “Head cut,” Julien said as he slashed downward in slow motion with his rapier. “Lunge,” and he thrust forward, pushing with his hind foot and rocking on his forward one. “I’m staying in place for the demonstration, but usually a lunge is coupled with short, rapid steps forward. The idea is to press your weight behind the motion of the sword.”
“That makes sense,”
“Exactly,” Julien praised. “A Parry is a counter-gesture that blocks an opponent’s stroke.” He held the rapier sidewise in front of himself. “Touché,” (pronounced two shay), Julien said as he stood tall, “is a literal translation of the word. A fencing match is scored by ‘touches;’ it takes five to win, and ‘touché’ is said when you or your opponent actually touch one or the other with the rapier or foil. Modern competitions are scored electronically with charged blades that activate a light on the opponent’s facemask.”
He looked sternly at
“Je comprend,”
“Are you ready to begin?”
“En garde,” Julien said, saluting and shifting to position, offering his blade.
“Move slowly at first,” Julien advised. “Learn the motions—practice the moves.”
“Oui.”
Julien brought his rapier about and started in on
“Good!” Julien approved. “Repetez, si vous plait.”

About the Author
M. Bradley Davis took an interest in writing because his sixth grade English teacher introduced him to poetry. Since then, Mr. Davis has learned poetry is not his forte. Mr. Davis wrote short stories during high school and finally began writing novels toward the end of college. A former elementary school teacher, he taught fourth grade for thirteen years. Courtesy, honesty, respect, and truthfulness were taught in his classroom along with the usual academic subjects. Mr. Davis was listed in Who’s Who Among Mr. Davis’ writing is inspired by the personalities of former students and the interaction he experiences with young people. His hobbies include reading, writing, amateur astronomy, and photography. Mr. Davis enjoys spending time with young people.
