Among numbrous poetry awards are the 1971 "John Mansfield" and the 1973 "Gustav Davidson" from the Poetry Society of America. Her work has been published in literary journals, including Prairie Schooner, Carolina Quarterly, St. Andrews Review, Pembroke Magazine, and aspen leaves. She has three collecions of poetry: Surely--Goodness and Mercy, Second Grace, and Spiraling. Her work is also included in several anthologies and textbooks.
In September, 1973, Sallie completed studies in American Art and American Poetry under Dr. Marvin Mitchell at
Sallie has served as President of the North Carolina Poetry Society, President of the North Carolina Writers Conference, Chairman of the Lincoln County Library Board of Trustees, and two-term appointee of Governor James B. Hunt to the board of trhe North Carolina Arts Council. She is at present a trustee of the Lincoln Arts Council.
