The small red Volvo hummed quietly as it sped along the desert highway in the evening darkness. I can’t believe how peaceful I feel right now, Neanna Miller thought. No obligations, I’m free. She pushed the threads of blonde hair away from her left eye and glanced toward the sky. The full moon sat just on the eastern horizon.
Ahead, she noticed a large strange rock formation . . . a solid black image thrusting up from the valley floor in the dimly lit night sky.
Odd shape, Neanna thought, as she closed on the huge monolith resembling a giant bell sitting on a broad pedestal. Now, it was almost opposite her, coming between the speeding Volvo sedan and the deep yellow moon.
You sure look like a bell, she said to herself. I wonder if you have some symbolic name, maybe an ancient Indian one.
The dark silhouette now stood directly between her and the shining moon. Suddenly, a brilliant orange glow encompassed the unusual formation. “Wow!” Neanna shouted aloud. “Would you look at that!”
Then, just as suddenly, her eyes riveted to the stone shape. It captured her gaze and wouldn’t let go. Her slim fingers gripped the wheel, trying to turn the out of control car, but the red Volvo shot off the road, out into the obscure desert valley. Dust and gravel filled the air behind and around the vehicle as it rocketed at full speed toward the luminescent bell-shaped rock.
The car with Neanna’s hands frozen to the steering wheel and her foot pressing the accelerator to the floor plunged across the barren valley, through a dry creek bed, and up the talus slope toward the gleaming sandstone formation. Neanna stared in disbelief as the huge stone wall filled her vision. Her eyes, wide open, locked on the tall formation. She felt her heart beat quicken. The noise pounded in her ears. She struggled to breathe, gasping. Short gulps filled her mouth as she pulled air into her panting lungs.
Within seconds, the rear wheels began to lose traction as the tires dug into the desert sand. They screamed and sank deeper until the car could no longer turn the buried wheels, then the engine stalled and died.
As the Volvo careened over the dry creek bed, the seat belt held, but the jolt slammed the side of Neanna’s head into the driver’s window. The blow on the temple woke her from the trance. For a moment, she sat stunned, sucking in volumes of air.
With trembling and sweating hands, she gently touched her head. Slivers of pain shot upward from the battered flesh. “My God, what happened, what happened?” she moaned. “I know I didn’t fall asleep. I could see everything.”
Somewhere out of the darkness a shadow fell across the car. She jumped, her body tensed, and her eyes scanned the inky blackness outside. Then something tapped on her window.
