About the Book

Prepare yourself for a wide range of plots, characters, and settings in Scott Fisher’s collection of short fiction Auto Stations of the Cross and Other Stories of Truthful Fiction.  Travel down the highway with a snobbish talking luxury car; or stop at an interstate rest area where you can get a cup of coffee, a new headlight, and some absolution, all at the same window.  Sit in the darkened bleachers of a haunted football stadium; or watch the world’s greatest hotdog vender do her thing at a minor league ballpark.  Take the shortest raft ride in history down the Mississippi River; or hear the roar of the engines of a mid-summer air show.  You may just find some reflections of yourself or your own memories here.

Along with these stories, enjoy the never-before-published illustrations, especially the unique pencil sketches by artist/writer Jan Neudeck created specifically for this collection.

The stories can be as shallow and entertaining, or as deep and troubling, as you like, depending on what you want to see, along with your own “baggage.”  The only common bond among the stories is they each reflect a tiny chunk of life, or the alternative to it, as America stretches its big toe into the 21st Century.  As with most reflections, there are the occasional distortions when viewed through separated pieces of the original image.  After all, a cast shadow might be a fair outline of a person, but it can’t be substituted for an ID photo – though sometimes the shadow is preferable.  There are smiles, frowns, laughter, tears, realism, and metaphor, sometimes all rolled into one.

            They’re simply stories . . . just for fun . . . maybe.

About the Author

Scott Fisher was born and raised, but never really “grew up,” in Iowa.  After going to Michigan to college, he embarked on a teaching and coaching career that included the high school and college levels, both in the Vocational (Auto- and Aviation-Technology) and Liberal Arts (English and Literature) areas.  He has taught at public schools in Michigan, North Dakota and Illinois, ironically always near a bordering state, so he also claims Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  He has been a professional educator for over 30 years, primarily at the two-year college level.

His writing career began as an undergraduate in college with short fiction, then progressed into the development of educational and technical training programs, both print and video, for the automotive and aerospace industries.  During that time he also researched and wrote non-fiction historical narrative pieces for various publications, primarily about US history, aviation, sports, and education.  He has published two books of Iowa-related history:  The Ironmen: The 1939 Hawkeyes and Courtesy-Service-Protection: The Iowa State Patrol, both still in print.  He has also won writing awards for his short fiction, personal essays, non-fiction historical narrative, and technical programs.

Scott’s life is a continuous and challenging quest to discover whether he is “a teacher who writes; or a writer who teaches.”  One of his non-writing goals is to hike in each of America’s national parks.  He is about halfway through that attempt, so he thinks there’s a good chance for achievement.  He currently writes from a rescued/restored telephone operator’s shack located behind his family’s century-old railroad hotel, now a bed and breakfast, The Inn of the Six-Toed Cat, in Allerton, Iowa.
