All Creation

        In the beginning of our tale, there were two young men who lived in a small town placed snuggly in the middle of the state of Kansas. The two young men were sitting and playing a game one night. However, the game was unlike most; it was not displayed on a TV screen, nor was it on the face of a computer. This particular game is known commonly as a role-playing game, which is played only on a few sheets of paper and the wide landscape of their own imaginations.

            In reality the two boys sat at a dinner table merely reading and speaking out the movements and actions of their characters, but in their minds they were deadlocked in an exciting world of danger and adventure. It was a place where they could be who they wanted to be and do what they wanted to do. A fantasy world like this is a comforting and warm place for the two boys to go, especially in such an unloving world as the one we live in today.

            In a time filled with violence, hated, racism, and ridicule, this game and other games like it helped to keep them happy and sane. Things and feelings like this cannot be explained, only felt or understood.

            One of the boys was a thin but lean young man with short blond hair colored as the rays of the sun. His skin was a pale Irish white accompanied by two deep blue eyes that matched the great oceans of the world. He was about average height with an athletic build. For many years he had immersed himself in gross amounts of physical activity solely to better himself for the next sports season. Across his face a smile could usually be seen, for he was a joyous soul; even in times of turmoil you could see him smile. This factor was just one of the small things that gave him the potential to become a great man, like his father before him.

            Then there was his loyal friend sitting just beside him, as always. He was about the same height as the other young man but he was not quite as athletic. At the very least, the years of neglect on his body had not been poorly spent, for he was a thinker and not a brute. This young man had a slightly darker skin color than that of the other, a color that could only be the product of a land very far away from the golden fields of Kansas. Atop the dark-skinned young man was a bushy crop short black hair. Under his nose hung a thick black mustache assisted by a thin goatee, which was also black. He, at that time, was the more experienced of the two at games like the one they played that night. He was also known as “the brains of the operation.”

            Even though they were both skilled individuals in their own different aspects, it was together that they truly made their best qualities. After all they were a team. Rarely were they seen apart and rarely did they disagree. They were like two soldiers watching over each other in a constant war zone. Each ready to defend the other, they were truly the best of friends.

            While the blond young man (who went by the name John) had spent most of his life training for various sports and activities, the darker-skinned young man (Ben) had spent the majority of his time playing on his computer at home and making good grades at school. It was as if the two of them were from two different worlds, but somehow despite their obvious differences, they had become very close and would stay that way for years to come.

            As the two young men finished their game, Ben quickly looked up at the clock. With astonishment in his voice he spoke, saying, “Oh man, it’s eight o’clock. I’ve got to get home.”
