About the Book

Shrinking workforces. Oppressive labor environments. Disengaged employees. Now, more than ever before, the manager that can mix in some mirth and lead with levity can affect positive, productive change. Lighten Up: Managing With Mirth Ain't Rocket Surgery teaches the whys and hows of using humor to build a culture that frees employee creativity, fosters good feelings, pushes productivity, and is good for the body and soul. Imagine the impact you’ll have when you learn to unleash your unique brand of humor in the right place and at the right time. Raise your employees’ spirits, build loyalty and trust, and most importantly, get results by simply lightening up a little. The difference between a leader who demands results and one who actually gets them can simply be a question of perspective. Are yours jaws constantly clenched? Do you have deep forehead wrinkles from relentless brow knitting? Sometimes just forcing yourself to smile or laugh is enough to drive away the spirit-sapping seriousness that plagues most managers and leaders. Lighten Up isn’t so much about rapid-fire wit or spinning a hilarious yarn as it is about loosening up and allowing others to do the same.

About the Author

Philosopher. Humanitarian. Pulitzer Prize winner. People Magazine’ Sexiest Man Alive. Author and lecturer Scott Christopher would like to meet the guy who is all those things. A Harvard MBA and PhD from Princeton are two really important sounding degrees, but Scott got his bachelor’s from BYU. And while he’s no Doctor of Workplace Humor or Certified Levity Facilitator, or even very smart at all, Scott’s held down a lot of jobs over the years where he researched his topic.

A self-described corporate outsider—having worked many years in the pretend world of television and film—Scott now sits at a cubicle and lunches ‘round noon like the rest of the real world. Rejoining the workaday world Scott discovered a yawning divide between leaders who demand results and leaders who actually get them. Scott believes leading with levity can fill the chasm.

Scott’s enthusiasm, energy and engaging wit make for unforgettable seminars and keynote speeches that touch hearts and split sides. Coauthor of The Levity Effect, a regular columnist for Human Capital magazine and contributing author of the best-selling A Carrot A Day, Scott also writes screenplays and acts in film and television.  He travels from Salt Lake City where he works for the O.C. Tanner Company, evangelizing the power of a Carrot Culture. He lives with his wife (just one) Liz and five sons.
