It was when they moved away towards the car-park that I realised why he seemed familiar; he looked a lot like my husband. My heart gave a tremendous lurch. Without thinking I jumped up and followed them. Dusk was falling and it was overcast. They stopped by a car and kissed. The girl got into her car and he walked on towards the rough stone steps in the corner. He did not notice me and I guessed that he was taking a shortcut to the other side of town. I followed him across the area of wasteland in between the old church and the supermarket car park. He was striding quickly, looking neither to left nor to right, and he did not see the two men in the shadows. I noticed them though, as they slipped out into the open and fell into step behind him. He turned and looking rather surprised, he began to speak to them. One of the men stepped up close to him and they struggled for a second or two. The two other men sped up the overgrown steps and vanished into the dusk, leaving their victim motionless on the dusty ground. I couldn’t believe my eyes and hid behind a parked car in the corner near some trees. As I waited, riveted to the spot, the woman rushed past me and ran up to the body. She bent down and felt his neck and then turned furtively to look back at me. I gently eased myself behind a buddleia bush and held my breath. She stood up and hurried back to her car. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Who were these people? What was going on? This was sleepy little old Oxted, not I leaned against the crumbling brick wall at the edge of the car park. * * * Max was trying to get up but Luka kicked him once more with a nicely placed blow to the temple. I could see the blood running down Max’s shocked face.
I began to run for the rocks that separated Lusty Glaze beach from the next beach. The tide had already reached the rocks and I had to be quick. Luka was sprinting after me. Max was lying on the sand. The other two men had almost reached him. I saw him struggling to his feet and pointing towards us. I ran on, glad that Luka seemed unhurt. He caught me up. We breathlessly ran on together. “Who are these men?” “It’s Max. He’s going to kill me.” “Is he insane?” “I think he is. He killed Joe’s son. I recognised him as soon as I saw him.” “Why did you not tell me?” “I’ll explain if we ever get away, keep running.” “Where are we to run to? You told me this beach is unsafe.” “Trust me, we’ll be all right.” I led him along through the waves which crashed about our knees. I saw Max and the others clambering over the rocks towards us. “We must get to the next beach before they catch up. Faster!” Luka and I sprinted towards the next bay, a small beach with tall smooth cliffs looming skywards. The tide was already half way up this little beach. I headed inland towards the cliffs. “No Nadine! We must go round. We shall be drowned in there,” Luka shouted when he saw the direction I had chosen “It’s our only chance. I know what I’m doing,” I panted. We reached boulders, caused by landslides, beneath the towering cliffs. “Keep down. We may have lost them.” I whispered although no one could have heard me against the crashing sounds of the surf. “We will surely drown,” Luka whispered. I peered out carefully. I saw Max and his companions standing there in the waves. They were soaked. I prayed that they would stay back for another few minutes. That would give us enough to escape and for them to be cut off by the tide. The men split up. Max climbed the rocks to try to see around to the next beach. I knew that he couldn’t. Jean was born a farmer’s daughter in She attended She won the all England School Championship four times in the High Jump event. She studied English Literature and Physical Education at college.
