A Baseball Love Story

At dinner:

Mel:      “Tell me about yourself.”

Donna:  “Are you really interested or are you just killing time??!!”

Mel:      “Both.”

Donna:  “Well, I’m divorced, no children.  I teach English at the high school.  I like my job, and I take it seriously.  Summers, I play in a women’s softball league.  I play shortstop, and believe it or not, I hit the most home runs on my team every year.”

Mel:      “You??!!”

Donna:  “Yes, me.  I know.  I’m 5’2”.” 

Mel:      “I guess I’ll never make it as a scout.”

Donna:  “I should tell you, it’s not that great an accomplishment.  If you watch us play, you’ll know what I mean.  But still, I have an uncanny knack for hitting home runs.”

Mel:      “And I have an uncanny knack for hitting fly balls to the outfield.”

Donna:  “Do you want to know my secret for hitting home runs?”

Mel:      “Desperately.”

Donna:  “Hit the ball on a fly, fair, and far out.”

Mel:      “Why didn’t I think of that??  You’re very interesting and very beautiful.”

Donna:  “In which order?”

Mel:      “I take the fifth.”
