When Clarion arrived at the waterfront restaurant, he wasn't happy. He and Helen did not share the same taste and this was not a place he would have chosen to meet. Admittedly, it was good in the sense that they would not be overheard, as there were no other customers. But, eating outdoors wasn't appealing to him. The bugs and the sand were awful enough, add the smell of boat oil and slime-covered seaweed in the back-water was nauseating. The water was stagnant and what littlle beach there was, was littered with trash.
He spotted Helen sitting in a corner, smoking a cigarette, and drinking from a can of beer. With a scowl on his face, he approached the table and chastised her. "Apparently there's no dress code here. Couldn't you have come up with something better than shorts and a tank top?"
Helen wasn't fazed. "Honey, you're more out of place than I'll ever be. I'm not here to impress you. Put your bony ass in that chair and let's talk. I wasn't sure you'd show up so I already ordered myself some fish n' chips."
Clarion pulled a chair out and dusted the sand off. Sarcastically, he asked, " You frequent this place often?"
She took a gulp of beer. " I haven't been in Florida long enough to be a regular anywhere. I move around a lot. It works for me. In most states, the demand for nurses is good and since I work in the sewage end of it, they don't give a damn.. Here today, gone tomorrow. Catch me if you can."
Clarion fidgeted in his chair as he watched Helen indulge herself in beer and another cigarette. He peered through his glasses and shook his head. What strange bedfellows they made. His only intention was to use her. If she did her job well, he could skim his take off the top, adding more funds to his own treasure chest. That's all he cared about.
To his disgust, he watched as she scratched herself under her bare, unshaven armpit. Carion thought to himself, "If she picks her nose, I'm leaving." Slipping her a Vial would be enjoyable.
She took a drag on her cigarettte, blowing smoke toward Clarion's face. "OK, make me rich. Explain your plan."

The author hopes you will find the anger, tears, romance and even a little humor locked in this story but also the wisdom to guard against the possibility of this happening.

M.A. Sweller is an U.S. Air Force Vietnam-era Veteran with degrees in Criminology and Social Science. She worked in Corporate Security while raising her three children and being a wife for 35 years to a commercial pilot. Michelle presently resides in Lone Tree, Colorado. Bottomline is her first novel and is on the verge of completing a second thriller.
