The next day everyone woke up early. O’Dell opened the ship’s door to a warm sunny morning. Everyone was startled by a chirping sound.
“What’s that?” Sara whispered.
“I don’t know,” Michael answered. Everyone went to the camera screen and saw a dinosaur eating leaves from the tree. It was about seven feet tall. It stood on two strong legs and had a long neck.
“It’s a Struthiomimus!” Michelle said.
“Is that good or bad?” Sara asked.
“Well,” she answered, “I’m not sure. We have always believed it was a meat-eater but a harmless one. It is a scavenger that only eats insects and carrion.”
“I think our theory is wrong,” William said. “It appears to be eating grass and leaves. It looks like a plant eater to me.”
“How could we have been wrong all these years? I want to get a closer look,” Michelle said as she began to walk
out the door toward the dinosaur. The Struthiomimus looked at her, chirped, and ran off with a blaze of speed.
“Good thing it’s a plant eater,” Sara said. “That thing is fast.”
“We should all get ready for a marvelous day of exploration,” Simonson said with joy. “It is time to see how else our scientists have been wrong.”
“Yes,” O’Dell said. “We must prepare ourselves. It’s not a game out here.” O’Dell tossed William his knife.
“I have a gun, figured I’d spread the wealth.”
“Gee thanks,” William said. “I feel real safe against a T-Rex with this.”
“It’s better than just your pen,” O’Dell said.
“Yeah, yeah. Let’s go.”
“We need to do our exploring in a precise manner,” Tom said. “We will call the direction Alpha Centauri rises east. In this instance, the tree is just to the north of our ship. Now, we are surrounded by forest. Do we want to go north, east, south, or west?”
“I’ll pass on south,” William said. Everyone looked at him strangely. “What? That’s where the T-Rex came from yesterday.”
“There was a song by the Pet Shop Boys that said ‘Go west, life is peaceful there.’ Maybe we should go west?” Sara said.
“Are you serious?” William asked. “Led Zeppelin also sang Stairway To Heaven. I don’t want to end up there.”
“William,” Sara said with a smile. “Don’t fear the reaper. Lets go west.”
