Autumn loved being with her mother and listening to these stories. Many things Golden Wings told her again and again, so that Autumn might remember them when she was older and could understand them better. There was an endless recounting of the history of their tribe and many tales of nature, the earth, wind, water, and animals. Autumn especially loved to hear about animals and their adventures. She would ask her mother to repeat these stories many times. Her mother always smiled and began again a favorite tale....
One day Autumn was bringing a small bucket of water home, trying to keep the water inside the bucket from splashing on the ground, when she was met by the Great Mother of the longhouse. This woman was much loved and respected. She spoke little but the lines of her face were soft and conveyed wisdom and compassion for all. The Great Mother shared everyone's chores and directed the daily activities of their house.
She was very serious this day and she looked deeply into Autumn's eyes as she spoke. "The god of sun has truly smiled on you, Autumn, because your knowing is early and you understand much that is needed in the longhouse, in the tribe, and for all of Earth Mother's creatures. It gives your mother much joy and comfort to see the seeds of understanding blossom in you."
"Now your mother is needing help, Autumn. It is too soon, but she has already begun her journey to return to the Earth Mother. You must listen with your heart so that you can understand what your mother is telling you. In this way she will be able to guide you always, even after she is freed from the earth and returns home."
