http://www.rebeccaparkins.com CHAPTER 1 THE ESCAPE On a warm, peaceful Hawaiian summer evening the air was filledwith the scent of plumeria blossoms. Lilly, a small white mouse lay sound asleep in her home in Tiny Town. The village lay nestled on the Island of Hawaii. She was snuggled safe and sound in her cozy home with her husband Louie and her nine new babies, Laverne,Larry, Louise, Laura, Lacy, Lance, Lane, Larissa and Leann. Lilly began to toss and turn. In her sleep she kicked off the sheets and struggled to sit up. Slowly one eye opened as she moved from a bad dream and into the darkness of the night. Her mouth was as dry as cotton. She gasped for fresh air. She coughed and rolled over, put two feet on the floor and tried to stand. She wobbled from lack of fresh air and fell back onto to the bed. She landed so hard and close to Louie that she knew she must have awakened him, but he remained motionless. “Louie, wake up!” Lilly turned toward him and shook him hard. “Something is terribly wrong!” Louie turned over with half a snore still on his breath. His little arms stretched above his head and his eyes barely opened. “What is it, Lilly?” He yawned slowly. “Something is very wrong. The air is suffocating and it’s beginning to hurt my throat. The pain is going deep into my lungs!” Again she inhaled quickly and gasped for fresh air. Louie unfortunately took a deep breath of his own and gasped and wheezed. His eyes began to water. He shook all over when he tried to take another deep breath. As he exhaled he shot out of bed and ran outside. The sky was dark. The moon was barely visible. Ash was thick in the air. “It’s blown! It’s blown!” Louie yelled frantically as he streaked back into the little mouse house. His arms flapped and his tiny feet were a blur. “What’s blown?” Lilly threw herself against the bedroom window only to see the ash-covered sky. “The volcano! It exploded!” “Pack up the kids, and I’ll grab some food. We need to get out of here!” Louie found a large box and stuffed what he could fit into it from the refrigerator and kitchen cabinets. As soon as Lilly snapped on the light, it fizzled and went out. In a pitch black panic she grabbed one child at a time and shoved them into the nine seated stroller. She vigorously pushed them out the door. At least she thought she had all nine. Louie was right behind pushing a green, rusty squeaky wheel barrow with his box of food tightly wedged down the sides.

About the Author
http://www.rebeccaparkins.com Rebecca Katherine Parkins has written and published poems, and has continued throughout her life to write stories and illustrate them from the time she was a small child. She comes from a long line of actors, writers, poets, and artists who ultimately expressed their creativity in the field of education. As a harpist she incorporates the lyrical sound of music into her writing. Education: Rebecca received her Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology from the University of Colorado Medical School, and proceeded to earn her Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Next she received her Principal’s License from the University of Colorado. Vocation: Ms Parkins played her harp in orchestras, at weddings and in small ensembles for serval years. She then worked as a Medical Technologist and went on to enter the field of law as a Medical Mal-Practice Litigation Paralegal, and finally she ended up in education. She has taught reading and has been a reading interventionist for many years in the Colorado Public School System. She loves to pass on her love for reading and writing to her students of all ages and backgrounds. She has won International Merit Poetry Awards and is in the Cambridge Who's Who.
