About the Author

Jack D. Kahlo developed a passion for airplanes and flying when he was just a kid selling newspapers in Ohio, and the news of Lindbergh’s historic flight swept the country.  After the Kahlo family settled in Southern California, l4-year-old Jack was the first to answer a help wanted ad to “Hoe weeds in exchange for l0-minute airplane ride.”  They couldn’t get rid of him at the airport.  With permission from understanding parents and a promise to keep his school work up, he became head flunky and soloed on his l6th birthday.

Finally, tired of missing meals, he added a night shift job at Northrop Aircraft to his duties.  Airplanes remained his top priority until one day a beautiful girl appeared to take flying lessons.  That day Jack said, “I’m going to marry you,” and three weeks later, he did.  It was the start of a wonderful nearly 60-year marriage.

December 7, l94l, was the last day he flew for many years because all non-military planes were grounded, and his eyesight didn’t permit him to become a military pilot.  With hard work and determination, Jack rose at Northrop to become assistant to the president.

Jack made a career shift to real estate, and Kahlo Realty prospered.  It wasn’t until his 85^th birthday that he started flying again – in his own little Great Lakes Trainer.

Jack knows how lucky he’s been to even survive all his adventures.  He thanks his guardian angel.
