Maturity
In the noisy world of swallows
Why shouldn’t I be cautious like the sparrows
Why should I be shallow
In a world that’s not a shadow
A world of mixed emotions
Mingled with frantic arrivals
And pathetic departures
I now applaud the ridiculed figures
For refusing to cover their conscience
With glittering gold that does not glow in the dark;
The wise-fools who refused to cloud their image
With wonderful sky of sinful triumph,
They refused to strangle their strength
For painful pleasures
Pleasures that never cease to mock true happiness
They refused to see with the eyes of a greedy child
They refused bullish monsters
Who bid for a horn-locking fight
Through them, I have learned
How to transform a burden of heavy weights
Into feathers, and watch them take off
And toss in the wind of aimlessness
I’ve learned that those who fail to see
That secret snares know not the path of destiny
Will also fail to see
That destiny is a skilled horse rider
On the back of ignorant traitors
I’ve learned that the journey to a rose
Is thorny and prickly to creepy creatures
Who scorn the fragile butterflies
But have no wings to fly.
I now believe that, the real test of maturity
Is not how we respond to our appraisers,
But how we respond to our abaters.
If we can see the light our appraisers
Why should the lies of our abaters dim our vision
I have learned that loser’s lane
Has some winners who lost their way
And a true hero, a true heroine
Will rather rescue than ridicule them
I have seen men who find their strength in the weakness of others
Pretentiously thriving to dim the rising light
Of one they envied
But failed to see their own light
Becoming a smoky candle with no light
If I can find solace
Neither in evasiveness, nor insecurity
But in sacrificial love
Have I not grown?
I still think it’s fun-listening to echoes
Of my laughter
Echoes of humor to all stumbling stones
Across my path
Have I not grown?

About the Author
Johnson was born in Nembe (Rivers state -Nigeria) Sixth of eight children of Mr. Wilcox Amadi and Helen Nwaubani (Igbo natives of Umuahia-Nigeria).
Johnson’s early love for poetry was at the C.M.S grammar school, Bariga- Lagos, and the University of Jos. (Plateau State-Nigeria) Johnson was inspired by Dr. Robert Zbeeb (A.K.A father Andrew) The English and literature professor at Emory University, and Beulah Heights University-Atlanta Georgia (1990) Johnson was also inspired by Chinua Achebe, Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, and Wole Soyinka.
Johnson is a graduate school student in mental health, theology, and criminal justice. He is currently engaged in a mental health research focused on cultural influence on behavior. He is a numerous award winning songwriter, poet, and music composer.
Several awards include five editor’s choice awards, literary and artistic excellence award. Diamond homer trophy, Shakespeare trophy of excellence, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2005 famous poet of the year, three medallions and famous poet’s competition cash prize winner (Reno-Nevada) Johnson’s poems are published in many poetry anthologies, Newspapers, Journals, and magazines. Johnson is a lifetime member of songwriters club of America (SCA)
A distinguished member of the international society of poets, International poetry hall of fame, and was nominated to feature in the 2003 edition of the marquis “WHO’S WHO” in American entertainment
He has authored over two hundred poems, five fiction works, and a musical CD album titled “peace and love”
His Songs “Awake Africa” “Songs of Freedom” and “Fragrance of your presence” were among the 2005 Song of year winners in the Songwriters 101/ VHI contest in Houston Texas USA. He was elected by the United States National poetry month committee as a 2006 poetry ambassador. Featured in a poetry documentary titled “vision”
