About the Book

As in “Poems 1”, much of the work is about the people and places from my youth while others are just visions from my subconscious. The following are excerpts…

Poems

“Through The Stained Glass”

“The sun barricaded by grey skies cold zephyr,

Barrels occupied by blazing fires and amber…

Slipping beneath the covers to close my eyes,

To escape the nightmare of muffled cries.”

“The Knife”

“Hair falling to the floor brought tears to my eyes,

The insults cascaded with each disguise…

The scalpel has no mind of its own as it cuts away,

Nothing left but consciousness and the soul to pray.”

“Directions of Thought”

“Tossing and turning in a cluttered mind,

A relentless bombardment,

Of ceaseless meanderings,

To which one cannot leave behind.”

Short Story

“A Movie Theater”

“It was three o’clock in the morning when I began searching for the dropped coins that became hidden beneath the seats of the darkened auditorium. It wasn’t long before the coins began to appear. First, the nickels, then the dimes, and finally the quarters appeared everywhere. My pockets began to bulge with coins. Then, the half dollars began to appear as I got closer to the walls. I couldn’t believe it. Suddenly, Henry Clay walked up behind me and joined in the search. But he found nothing but popcorn and empty candy wrappers. Then he disappeared and once again, I found myself all alone. But, the coins continued to appear seemingly out of nowhere.”

About the Author

Marvin R. Mednick was born in Brooklyn, New York. When he six months old his family moved to Woodridge, a small resort community, located in the Catskill Mountains, about 90 miles northwest of the city. For many years his father, then he were projectionists at the local movie theater. This would become the basis for his first novel “The Lyceum” which was published in 2004, when he was 60 years old. Although, his older bother was the writer in the family, he felt a desperate need to write about his recently deceased father and the theater that affected his life. It was both a therapeutic and satisfying endeavor that inspired his creative juices even further. Having dabbled in writing poems for his own amusement many years earlier, he compiled a book “Poems & Short Stories Vol. 1, which was published in 2005. Much of the work was about the people and places of his youth growing up in Woodridge. In 2005 he began work on his first fictional novel “Joseph Randolph” which he completed in 2006. At the same time he began writing and compiling “Poems & Short Stories Vol. 2,” which, like Vol. 1, is about the people and places of his youth.  Also, as of this writing, he has begun his third novel “Citizen of the Year.”

He is a single parent, with three children and seven grandchildren. He has been residing in Savannah, GA (with a short stint in Jacksonville, FL) since 1977.
