Morning in Amagansett

I see the sun come, rising,

 Over a sleepy ocean dune,

While the morning mist, my face having kissed, disappears into space

Much too soon.

And the ocean roars its strength like a lion,

Saying to one and all “I am King”

Its breakers bring foam and I know that I am home

And my heart begins to sing.

And the sand is as pure as a virgin; all soft and silky white

As I dig my hand through that marvelous sand,

I know in my mind all is right.

The gulls circle and dive for their breakfast, all the while screeching their song

The dune grasses blow, swaying to and fro

This is the land where I belong.

That’s the dawn of my day in the Hamptons, and it beckons and calls out to me

It says, be real, and I’ll allow you to feel

All those beauties far beyond those you see

So I quickly fall into the pattern of life

As I was meant to live

To touch and taste, savoring without haste,

All that God’s nature has to give

But soon my vacation will be ended, and back to the grind I must go

Back to the mine, where the lights rarely shine

To achieve more power and dough

But one day these needs will be over;

I’ll return to the Hampton and stay

I will walk the beach, its virtues I’ll preach,

And keep the rest of the world far, far away.
