About the Author
Alabama native, Marilyn Perkins,
received a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Montevallo and a
master’s degree in special education from West Virginia College of Graduate
Studies. In this collection of poetry, she condenses insights gleaned
from her observations of general life, as well as, her experiences as educator,
writer, and speaker.
Colorful and adventurous, the
generalities of her life have been exciting contrasts and transitions. From childhood, she spent the winters in a small, rural town and the summers in
Atlanta. As a high school student
in the Deep South, she witnessed the transition from segregation to
desegregation. When she graduated from college, she moved from the
flatlands to the Appalachian Mountains. And, she was teaching special education
before and during the transition from self-contained schools to mainstreaming.
Through these experiences, she has
discovered the need for building fences, the beauty on both sides of the fence,
the struggle necessary to remove the fence, the despair that results from
premature removal, and the glory that comes from timely removal.
She is vice president of Covenant
Mountain Ministries, Inc., a non-profit company dedicated to spreading the
gospel through the establishment of churches and assisting in the creation of
new ministries. She lives in southern West Virginia with her husband.
