The Office of the Pastorate
The office of the pastorate has a twofold function - administrative and instructional; hence those chosen to fill this position were known as “pastors and teachers.” Since the term pastor implies the duties of both instruction and government; and since elders or bishops wee ordained in the various churches by the apostles or evangelists, it is evident that these are the pastors to which The term elder was taken from Judaism, and had reference to age or dignity; that of bishop came from the Greeks, and had reference to office. We are to understand by the use of the term elder, not so much an office, as an order in the ministry. Hence we read of the ordination of Timothy, by the laying on of the hands of he presbytery (1 Timothy 4:14) (Wiley, 1964). Ministry means service. This concept is basic in either the secular or sacred realm. In the Judeo – Christian tradition, while all God’s children are His servants, some have always been chosen for special ministries. The first of these was the priesthood. Early in Genesis account we are introduced to Melchizedek, the priest of God, who blessed Abram in His name and received tithes in return. Later priests and Levites conducted the sacrifices and ceremonies of Tabernacle and The other ministerial office set apart in the Old Testament was that of prophet. While on occasion he was given special gifts for foretelling future events, his primary task was that of forth – telling, or preaching as we think of it today. Though their service went largely unappreciated by their hearers, the prophetic ministry of such stalwarts as Amos and Isaiah stands as a timeless example of fearless proclamation of divine truth (Stowe, 1976). The New Testament pattern of ministry is a Person rather than an office. In Christ the priestly functions and the prophet’s role are perfectly melded in His ministry of reconciliation. ABOUT THE BOOK The main purpose of "The Minister's Friend" is to aid the gospel pastor-preacher with duties or practices relating to his calling which by no means exempt laypersons from reading its contents. “The Minister’s Friend” will afford laypersons a practical understanding of preacher and pastor in general from a Christian and Baptist perspective. It is with great assurance laity will gain a greater understanding and appreciation for those men of the cloth who are "called out" from among the called out. “The Minister’s Friend” is a practical, rich resource of Baptist tradition in guiding the preacher-pastor in the Gospel Ministry. If the contents of this publication assists preacher and pastor in any way then its mission is truly accomplished for the purposes intended in the work of the Gospel Ministry. This publication is fourth in a series of Dr. Wylie’s other publications entitled: “Only One God: Who Is He,” “The Miracles of Christ,” “Know Your Enemy: The Devil,” and the publication you now hold in hand: “The Minister’s Friend.” Finally, the intention of this publication to aid and help prepare the minister in carrying out those duties, tasks or responsibilities in the work of ministry in which God has called the Gospel Preacher – Pastor which helps enable him to equip others as servants of God. “The Minister’s Friend” will certainly help any preacher - pastor make full proof of one’s ministry.
