Michelle E. Brown was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. An author, artist and activist, her work is strongly influenced by the socio-economic, political and human rights history of the city. Drawing upon the city’s rich history and her own personal travels locally and nationally for inspiration, she has written essays, poetry, performance pieces, short stories and a children’s book.
Ms. Brown writes a monthly viewpoint column in “Between The Lines” Newspaper based in Livonia, Michigan and is a panelist on the monthly segment on diversity on WRFG – Radio Free Georgia’s “Alternative Perspectives”. She has received several awards both nationally and locally including the “Spirit of Detroit “ award (2005), Triangle Foundation’s “Catalyst Award” (2005), Human Rights Campaign “Diversity Outreach” award (2005, 2006) and the 2007 Media Award presented at the 22nd Annual Pride Banquet.
