1. Disturbances at Westfarm The phone rang. I roused myself with a start, and got up from the too warm bed covers. The ringing of the phone kept shattering the silence of the night as I went staggering out into the writing room to pick up the receiver. I heard Edward stir behind me; he sat up suddenly when he heard my voice in the dark. “Hello_” “Geoffrey?” the woman’s voice inquired, impatiently, breathing heavily into the phone at the other end of the line. “Hello? Who is this?” I was groggy and unsure of myself, but I thought I knew whose voice it was! “Geoffrey_” the voice pleaded in a hushed tone, “there’s someone here.” “Where? Mary_ is that you?” “Yes! Someone broke into the house! There’s been an incredible wind-storm here_ and I’m afraid_” She was clearly unnerved, which was a state I’d never heard her in before! “Are you all right?!” “Yes_ for now. But they might come back! Oh God, Geoffrey! Can you get over here!?” “Have you called anyone? The police? Your sons?” “No_ God no! And when you get here and see what’s happened_” she took a deep breath, and she sounded even more desperate, “you’ll understand why not!” “You really ought to call the cops! Are you in danger?” “Yes!” she breathed desperately in my ear. Her fear touched the quick of my heart. Edward, having heard the urgency in my voice, left his cot and came into the writing room. He stood near me, listening. I held the hand unit of the old black phone out to my shoulder so Edward could lean in and hear what was being said. “Did you see them? Did they threaten you? Are they still there?” “No! No! No!” She cried, exasperated at my questions, yet still whispering desperately. “What then?” “Geoffrey_ they were after the trunks; the trunks of the Dier! They might still be stalking the house_ out-side!” She made a noise that sounded like a sob. Was she crying? “Geoffrey, come quick_ for God-sakes!” “Will you be all right till I get there?” I asked, picking up an alarm clock at my desk and trying to focus on the green LED display. It was
