The Color of My Hair

Sam, I was named after my dad,

Arnita was included, so she was glad.

Most people think being a girl, I should be mad,

Until they hear my story that I am glad,

Even though part of my name could be considered bad,

Since labeled so often, mistakenly a lad.

JoNita

Jo being the name of the old dog that my parents had,

Of course, my name was certainly not a fad,

Nita, that name, came from my mom, you see,

Ima Lois Chimney Lampkin, my aunt, did this to me,

Together, she put, Samuel Jonita, two out of the three,

All to create a unique name for me.

So I was named after my dad, a dog and then my mom,

And with the last name, back to my dad we come.
