About the Author

We are delighted that our mother has decided to share her wonderful stories of caring for the elderly with the rest of the world.

In her own passionate and strongly principled way, she describes some of the most intriguing accounts of her experiences as one of the most highly respected care givers in her mid western home of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mother’s writings are a comforting reminder of the times when she was most committed and determined. A reminder also of how our lives have been so enriched having the benefit of such a great teacher. Our mother has a spirit of excellence, which has been a motivating factor in her life. It was this very motivation that earned her the reputation for being an excellent caregiver. No detail, from her diligence in patient care down to her pressed white uniforms and polished nursing shoes, escaped her attention. It was important to our mother to treat her patients as she would want to be treated if she was in their situation.

On the following pages, mother candidly discusses the challenges she faced early in her career as a black woman struggling to attain the acknowledgment and appreciation that she rightfully deserved. In the subtle, modest approach that as her children we have grown to admire and respect, mother also describes her eventual success in that struggle.

Having cared for many of the wealthy citizens of Missouri satisfied mothers love and interest of fine things that she also enjoyed growing up. Cuisine, fashion, and social etiquette are mother’s specialties that were accentuated by her exposure to the many patients that she cared for.

We hope that your journey through our mother’s pages will touch your life even slightly in the unforgettable and endearing way that she has touched ours.
