Preface Forty Plus Years of Looking for Treasure I became a coin nut at about 6 or 7 years old, when I found a half dollar in my back yard lying in the grass. I would like to say that it was the beauty of Miss Liberty on the obverse of my newfound treasure that fascinated me, but at that age the eagle was more my speed and the fact it was large and shiny. It was the biggest coin I had ever had in my pocket. I had found a treasure of great value; you could buy ten sodas or maybe 50 pieces of candy at the corner store. Now I had a major dilemma, I could not spend it and keep it too. I’ll let you guess what a 7 year old boy decided. For many years on my birthday, I used to receive “Peace” silver dollars from a friend of my dad’s. I wish I still had those coins but I don’t. I’m sure they are still out there somewhere or in someone’s collection. My dad & uncle brought back coins from where they served in WWII and I still have some of those. From time to time as many have done I would find Canadian coins in my change and I would save them because I thought they where special finds. Even though I didn’t know much about collecting, my fascination with coins continued.

About the Author
He spent two years in the USNR and four years in the USN. He retired after thirty years with Xerox Corporation. He is a graduate of De Vry Institute of Technology, Chicago and Utility Engineering Institute, Chicago. He has a wife of forty-five years and two grown daughters. He has been collecting coins for over forty years. He is a member of the ANA and a life member of the PNS (Pensacola Numismatic Society). He has taken ANA courses in grading uncirculated and circulated coin, Minting processes and Mint errors and varieties. He collects Morgan dollars, Walkers halves, Franklin halves, Indian Head pennies, Buffalo nickels, and Proof quarters and nickels. He does coin collection appraisals on the side.
