Chapter 10.
YOU WILL NEED MONEY... Here's how to get it!
A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.
Ecclesiastes 10:19
WHAT DOES MONEY REALLY DO?
Money. You have probably seen it in various denominations, British Pounds Sterling, American Dollars, Nigerian Naira, Indian and Pakistani Rupees, and so on. It is all around us, yet in every nation, it tends to pitch its tent with just a few. The aim of this chapter is to make you think deeply about money, effective ways to get it, and to take action!
Stephen Green, a speaker at Rich Dad Education made a profound statement ‘most of us were taught how not to make money’, he said. I find it particularly true in my case. A University education ticks the box in my family, so does a second degree, overseas residence and a decent job. Of course these are good, but I desire more in life than nine to five and living on money handed me by my employer.
Before we proceed, let’s ask ourselves this important question, ‘what does money do?’ ‘What a silly question to ask’, you may say. After all, even two year old Shellie knows that the Ice Cream Man does not part with the cone until Mom hands him the Pound coin. Anyway, please indulge me. Let’s attempt to answer this question. What would your answer be? Would I be right to assume you will say: ‘Money gives empowerment, security, and freedom?’
Yes, money gives all the above. Allow me to ask another question: do you want empowerment, security and the freedom to do whatever you want to do in life? An affirmative answer from you means one thing, you need money. And if you need anything, the sensible thing to do is to go after it. A lot of us, including myself were brought up in environments where the philosophy on money was ‘godliness with contentment is great gain’1 and ‘the love of money is the root of all evil’2.
Yes, God does not want us to be greedy. But neither does He want us to live in poverty. The unhealthy and inhuman urge to get money at all costs is the root of all evil, is what the Bible implies in the passage quoted earlier. It does not say the possession of money is the root of all evil. I agree with those who say money cannot offer happiness, but it sure can offer many things that can give you happiness. Wealth is no replacement for what only God can do, but God has made it available on earth so that mankind can get a lot of things done.
The truth is that in order to achieve our life goals, we need money, enough money. The Evangelist needs money to organize his meetings, Governments need money to provide amenities, and parents need it to send their kids to good schools. One of my dreams is for my children to get the best education, but that might not happen if all I do is scratch my bank account for pennies. Most parents’ concern for the future is about their children. I want the future secured for my kids and one of the ways of achieving it is by having enough money.
There are numerous myths about money, and more often than not, they keep people poor. I acknowledge that there are many out there who due to their situation do not have the acquisition of wealth on their agenda. But for those who live in the so called lands of opportunities, I adjure you to please read on and let’s reason together. I also understand that there are some of us who just want to do our jobs and have just about enough, if you belong to that class, can I ask you to please not give up on this chapter yet. Let’s also reason together and see if we can better our lot in life.
HOW TO MAKE AND RETAIN MONEY
Money is not made for a group of privileged people. It is a medium of exchange which is to be desired by anyone who needs to purchase anything. You are not entitled to money just because you exist, to have money you must take some actions? The million dollar question is, ‘what do I need to do in order to acquire and most especially retain money?’
Conventional knowledge says the way to be rich (please don’t be scared of the word rich, it simply means to have money in abundance- it is not a bad word), is to have a good job, work hard at it and money will come. I say not enough!
Find below some principles you need to know about how you can make money and retain it.
