This essay was undertaken to determine whether or not Ignatius of Antioch in his letters to some of the earliest Christian communities provided us with information about the office of diaconate. If so, the question is raised whether this information elicits new insights to this restored office of the Church as it is currently configured. This investigation requires determining whether sufficient information about this office exists in Ignatius’ writings to substantiate suggestions for improvement today. My hypothesis is that Ignatius’ insights could be of benefit to the current understanding of this office, especially in its pastoral and ordered functions of working within the parish and the diocese. In order to accomplish this, it will be necessary to look at the roles that Ignatius identifies, which may or may not be of further assistance. Another task of testing this hypothesis is to determine if any such roles identified by Ignatius are referred to in contemporary Church writings and to what extent and benefit.

About the Book
Ignatius of Antioch gives us meaningful insights into his high regard and use of deacons. These insights have been historically documented and carried forward to the application of the office of Diaconate in today's world. Polemic from both ordained offices of Priest and Deacon are analyzed and placed in today's context without prejudice. The challenge from the past, seeks further involvement both from Directors of Diaconate Programs and a challenge to their Bishops.
About the Author
James is an ordained Deacon for the Archdiocese of San Antonio. He earned his degrees in Masters of Clinical Social Work and Masters of Arts Theology. A graduate of Oblate School of Theology, James specialized in Systematic Theology and Scripture Studies, He routinely teaches Sacred Scripture classes both to laymen and Deacons. His classes begin with an Introduction to Sacred Scripture and progress to the four gospels. He also conducts classes on Torah, Wisdom Literature, Prophets Christology, and Philosophy of Ethics. James practiced his clinical skills until he went into hospital administration. Now retired, James is a former member of the American College of Hospital Executives and a Fellow of the American Association of Medical Administrators
