Shoes. I needed a new pair of shoes. The traditional box heeled, black "nun shoes" were no longer the absolute. It was thus that I would venture to the mall to make my purchase. Nora came with me, honoring the tradition that sister must travel with a companion. Nora was a great companion. Her healthy humor was expressed under her other recognized name, "Marky". We talked and laughed on our little trip. The loafers, Bass-Weegens, were purchased and we started back to the Motherhouse. Soon, in the realization that we were near Goodnose, the best ice cream place in Buck's County, combined with some left over money from the shoe purchase, temptation loomed. And we submitted. What the heck! So the shoes cost a couple dollars more! Goodnose has a selection of ice creams unmatched by any ice cream parlor. I always read the selection carefully and then choose chocolate. We licked and laughed as we headed toward Quarry Road and the Motherhouse. It was then that "Marky" emerged. "Look," she said, "it's the Mistress." I had lost my bearings and did not realize that we had not yet entered the Motherhouse property. The ice cream took a leap from my nervous hand and found rest on my grey domino (cape). A chocolate covered domino. How would I explain that? An explanation would be necessary.
There was a tradition for returning
home. One did not talk to anyone at
all until visiting the Superior, in this
case the Mistress, and offering the
greeting: "Praised Be Jesus Christ."
I would have to present myself
before her, with my praise, my shoes
and my chocolate domino. How could
I cover up the fact that I had made
an illegal purchase and then ate the
product outside of the dining room,
and without the striped apron? Marky
was clear, but me? Hmmm.
It's your guess! How will this end?

What's "The Scoop on Ruth"? When you open the book you will enter my world and discover what I have been about. It is a tell all, an honest revelation.
That world begins with "All in the Family' and the people and events where growing up happens. In "Sense and Nun-sense" you will be privy to some events even to this day hidden from Sister Superior- like "The Chocolate Cover-Up". Then "Along the Way" there are defining moments and people that ultimately influence us to become who we are.Yes, even when a good Catholic girl flunks Communion.
The final section "The 'P' Source" began in the novitiate when no talent me was encouraged to write "gospels". My creative pen found other modes of expression, into writing prayers, greetings, or capturing events.
And, there is room for your story to come alive here. It's because I was a copy cat. I borrowed Jesus' style. So, if the parable fits….
About the Author
This woman holds some "oldest" claIms.: oldest sibling of four, dyonne in a band of fifteen postulants, oldest in a long time friendship. Each claim has something to say in the sections of her book, The Scoop on Ruth. I am this woman. Adding to the feel of my book is the variety of her lived experiences as a sales clerk, Spanish teacher, Campus Minister and over forty years as a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart.
