I trotted up the steps. A small chameleon lizard scuttled from under the house and across the porch to the other side then hurriedly disappeared under the house again. A dirt dauber buzzed in the rafters. A chair scraped on the floor inside and then I could hear my mother’s loud voice. It trumpeted through the walls to my ears as I stood on the porch. I put my hand on the door handle then I hesitated. I wanted to sneak back down the steps and run back into the forest. Instead, I stood still listening.
“Oh Earl, we need to move to another house with electricity and water inside!” After a pause she continued. “I didn’t want to move back to the south! I hated it when I was a child and I still hate it!” Her voice rose sharply in an angry bitter tone. Then she said, “We had it made in the north. The Lord won’t bless you for moving your family to the south! You should feel ashamed! You call yourself a Christian?”
