True Adventure Stories of a Whitetail Deer Hunter

It was a cold morning, very still, very quiet. I sat on my stool with my gloves on to keep my fingers from freezing. I was hunting with a WW1, 1918, 30 - 06 Edistone bolt action rifle, a very heavy, cold piece of steel. When this gun wis fired, everyone knew who was shooting, because it sounded like a cannon echoing through the forest! About an hour into daylight, the fresh snow was sparkling from the sun's rays peeking over the tree tops. Early morning sounds of chickadees chirping, and an occasional crow squawking as he flew over head, were all I heard as I sat motionless, waiting, watching, and listening carefully. All at once, I heard the crunching of hooves coming closer, fast! The next thing I knew, a big doe ran past me as if her tail was on fire! I was sitting so close to the trail, if I'd stuck out my rifle I could have tripped her! I gathered my wits and stared down the trail towards in the direction from which the doe came running; she was running for a reason. Sure enough; down the trail came the reason she was running so fast. Heading right for me, was a deer with a huge rack of antlers! I pulled off my gloves and raised my rifle to aim; at which point the buck veered off the trail into the grove of evergreens; I waited, it seemed like forever, for him to show again.
