‘Hello Samantha, it’s good to see you again. How are you and how’s your sister/mother or is it mother/sister?’
I looked up just at that moment. I had put Katya’s bag down in the hall as Katya greeted my sister. I watched Samantha’s face go through a whole series of expressions before she laughed, stepped forward and gave Katya a big hug. Once again Katya looked a little surprised. When I saw Samantha look puzzled at Katya’s expression I explained. ‘Katya has, or perhaps had until recently this misconception that all English people are reserved, aloof, and not given to showing emotions. I hugged her at the station and you sister dear have just hugged her again, and that is why she is wearing that rather puzzled look on her face. By the way I am interested too whether it is sister/mother or mother/sister?’
Samantha looked daggers at me as she stepped back from hugging Katya. ‘I’ll let you guess,’ she said, ‘but woe betide you if you guess wrong.’
‘Katya, this is a wonderful vision this early in the morning,’ and just to add to Katya’s continuing confusion my father swept into the hall and gave Katya a big hug.
‘It’s a big Lord conspiracy Katya,’ I said trying not to laugh too hard. ‘We all planned it this morning over breakfast, that we would show our American cousins how human we stiff upper-lip Brits can be.

About the Book
As part of his job of managing Fotheringham Manor for his parents Daniel Lord tries to help forest employee John Ferris and his wife Betty recover from their past traumatic week of rape and murder. These events happened in the Ferris cottage on the Estate because of the return of Idwal Ferris, John’s elder brother. For relaxation from these people problems Daniel teams up with Katya Howard to caddie for him around the golf course. However, Katya is also a forester and she wants to generate green revenues from the forest. While exploring the Estate Daniel and Katya start a series of events resulting in the discovery of some long-lost Lord family treasure, an old murder and the precipitation of a new and conclusive murder.
About the Author
John Osborn was born in 1939 in Ipswich England but grew up in the East End of London where he learnt to sail. In North Wales he graduated as a professional forester and rock climbed three days a week. After working as a field forester for three years in Australia John went to Vancouver, British Columbia for postgraduate studies and the Flower Power movement of the sixties. While working for thirty years for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, both as a forester and a systems analyst John sailed competitively, climbed mountains and taught survival and winter camping. He finished his professional career with three years consulting in Zimbabwe, walking with the lions. Now retired, although working part-time at the local Golf Club, John lives with his wife in Kelowna, BC where he hikes and x-c skis from his doorstep.
