Chapter 7
Quinton
Jade called me about seven this morning, practically begging me to go to church with her. After a few minutes of pleading a case for why I should stay home buried under the covers, my case was dismissed. Just like every other time I’ve attempted to hide my emotions from Jade, she was able to see right through me. She knew that the severance of my past relationship has been getting me down, so I managed to fill her in- just a little- about how I was feeling. I hadn’t told Jade all of the details because even though I’m her younger brother, I am still my own man, a private one at that. She would probably have me committed to a mental institution if I’d given her all of the details.
Jade stated that church was exactly where I needed to be due to my present state of mind. Jade commented that I was, “Despair on two legs in need of direction.” I couldn’t argue with her there! Why waste the energy trying? I can’t even remember an occasion when I have won an argument with Jade and since she’d pounded the gavel in my case, I selected my attire for church and headed for the shower.
I stood in the mirror in my bedroom aligning my tie, popping my collar and revisiting the thoughts of my initial attraction to Tiffany. How could I have been stupid enough to allow her into my world? Why didn’t I recognize a woman who only sought to constantly and blatantly disrespect and use me? How and when did she decide to leave me for some buster who, whenever I’d seen him on the evening news speaking on behalf of a high-profile client, didn’t appear to be all that. To his credit, Tiffany obviously found that his bank roll was fatter than mine, but my millionaire status is in the making!
What else did Tiffany see in this guy? For one, he is probably more stationary than I am. Hell, when I had the rare occasion to be home, Tiffany treated me as if I didn’t exist. Shopping trips and extended shifts at the clinic and hospital where she worked were coordinated all around me, allowing an irreversible wedge of emotional detachment to forge itself between us.
Why couldn’t Tiffany accept and acknowledge all I had to offer? I gave her exclusivity, intimacy and financial support, all the things that women demand from the men in their lives. In hindsight, I realize that I became complacent with Tiffany’s boring demeanor, unselfishly overlooking the fact that she didn’t turn me on the way that she did initially. At some point over the past three years, I believe she stopped trying.
I simply accepted the state of confusion in our relationship as something that all couples in long distance relationships go through. I kept telling myself that everything would get better once there was a reduction in my work load. Maybe I overlooked the chaos in my relationship with Tiffany because I overwhelmingly and selfishly felt the need to be involved with someone. Should I continue to point out the flaws in my relationship with Tiffany? Should I continually stand here in search of which way the finger of blame should be pointed?
I don’t know how to answer those questions right now, but I do know that these corrupt thoughts of revenge swarming around in my head have to be especially unhealthy when I’m on my way to church. I simply cannot allow Tiffany to have this dominant effect on my emotional well-being! The time that Tiffany and I were apart should have healed whatever led to what was ailing us as a couple. Time should have unraveled whatever served as the source of confining us
