About the Book
“Hockey for Parents” (learn the basics to help your child play better hockey)book by Mark James -A review of hockey parents indicates an increasing number of parents who have not grown up with the game or have not played as children. The goal of this book was to create a simple hockey reference book targeted to these hockey parents, to help them better understand the strategies and basics of playing hockey while serving as a good refresher for parents with hockey experience. Parents that offer instructions to their children, with the best of intentions, without the basic understanding of the fundamentals of the game, may be leading our young players astray. Hockey is a game of structure similar to chess. It requires the players to understand the basic systems of the game, and then to read and react to the opponents’ moves. Thinking ahead and interpreting the play can only be developed with a strong understanding of the game. As a lot of parents get involved with hockey to volunteer and to be with their children, I believe it is critical that the parents develop knowledge of the game comparable to their child. This, in turn, will promote meaningful conversations which will lead to your child’s improvement and success on the ice. For the parents who have questions and are uncomfortable asking them, this book will hopefully answer some of the basic questions that come to mind when the whistle blows and the shouting from the stands begins. Hockey is a game, but mainly it is a life lesson. It is important that we as parents do everything to make it a positive and meaningful experience in an enjoyable and healthy environment.
About the Author
Mark is a father of 4 boys who have played hockey from “AAA” (top travelling teams) to house league. Mark had a successful hockey career himself, which included some junior hockey and university hockey in Canada. Mark started as a head coach when he was 16 years old, and has continued coaching or assistant coaching his sons' teams (sometimes 2 teams a year) throughout their minor hockey careers. Mark is a strong technical coach and leader. He has been able to teach his players, and relate the hockey skills being taught to success in game situations. His focus has always been on the mental side of the game, with his standard preseason line never changing, “If we are the smartest team by the end of the year, and we fully buy in to the team “System”, then we will be in a position to win a Championship”. His sons' trophy cases seem to support the success of this philosophy. Between travelling to games, the hard hour wait before games, and the game time itself, Mark and his wife Nancy, were spending over 40 hours a week of time dedicated to hockey. That did not include tournaments which some years exceeded 20 in a year. During all his time in the rink it became a common theme that no matter which of his sons' games or practices they were attending the same conversations and questions came up repeatedly. Mark has finally found the time to draw on his coaching and hockey parenting experiences to produce a reference book that he hopes will aid any parent to better understand the game of hockey.
