Activity: "Can You Name It?" Your toddler will begin to use real words when communicating with you. You can help him produce sounds, words approximations, or true words by prompting him to talk during daily routines. Playing the Activity: Place or sit your toddler down at a table for a snack. During snack time say, “Tommy, here’s some juice. Can you tell me what it is?” Prompt him to say “juice.” If he says “juju,” say, “Yes, juice. You’re drinking juice.” Praise him. Other daily routines will allow you to prompt your toddler to talk. During playtime, say, “Look Tommy, here’s your ball. Can you say ball?” If he says “ba” or “ball,” say, “bababa” or “ball. Yes, it is a ball,” and praise him. He will soon say some true words on his own. While reading him a story, say, “Here’s your book. Do you see the puppy?” Point to the picture and ask, “What is it?” If he says the sound “pu,” say, “pupupu” or “Yes, it is a puppy.” Praise him for any sounds, word approximations, or true words you hear.

There are interactive activities for infants (e.g., Rattle Time, Lots of Sounds, Peek-a-Boo), toddlers (e.g., Surprise Bag, Flashlight Fun, Bear Talk), and preschoolers (e.g., Listen Up, Hunting for Colors, Silly Stories). These games can be played when you and your child have a few extra minutes during daily routines, playtime, or story time. You can also use this book when you are on the move, so make sure you carry it wherever you go.
About the Author
JO ANN GRAMLICH is a speech-language pathologist who provides evaluation and remediation services for children with communication disorders in the Buffalo Public School District of Western New York. She also provides speech-language therapy for children in early intervention and preschool programs within Erie County. She holds a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the State University of New York College at Buffalo.
