If Today I Hear the Loons I know that spring begins with winter And death begins at birth, How all things must return to earth And leaves must fall, so spring might live. And I know, too, as surely as season follows season, Turning earth in cycle's fold, So too must there be roots. But also --- unbound wing in endless sky. Thus, if today I hear the loons, My soul shall leap for joy. Their haunting, plaintive yodeling Primitive echoes of my inner self. If today I hear the loons, I shall know tall mountains still do stand. Unnamed, untamed. That clear waters Still do rush and tumble free. And if today I hear the loons I'll know sun still nurtures sweet, sweet earth. Wild sea ebbs and flows With burgeoning tide And brave branches twist and reach Toward azure sky and tallow moon. For how long? For as long as mountain ranges march and glaciers creep To calve their icy offspring to the deep. For as long as song is borne on restless wind And wild heart beats and spirit soars And splendid wilderness courses through my veins. As long as bone and flesh in haunted stillness dwells. Thus shall my soul in solitude leap for joy! If today I hear the loons.
