Once there was a fire hydrant that stood all alone in a great big yard. “I am so bored and lonely. What am I to do?”
The little fire hydrant’s name was PLUG. People in the neighborhood passed by PLUG every day. Nobody paid him any attention. “I wish someone would pay attention to me.”
Except maybe they would say, “What an ugly fire hydrant right in our great big yard.”
“People think I’m so ugly.”
PLUG had rusty places all over from the tears he had cried because he was so lonely.
“I wish I had something to do. I wish something wonderful would happen to me.”
PLUG waited and waited for something to happen.
Then, one wonderful day, a stranger came into PLUG’s life. She began rubbing his head with something quite rough and scratchy. All his old loose paint began falling to the ground. PLUG wondered what was happening to him.
“What’s happening to me?”
