About the Book

"This is the story of a young man who becomes emotionally disturbed with life after his parents divorce at the age of seven. In life we take for granted the importance of giving our kids a stable home which in turn gives them a great balance of discipline and love. This story shows how parents splitting up can have a huge affect on children who turn into young men and then adults. Simon Cooper substituted his family with the football casuals of Manchester City's Young Guvnors. This is deeper than your average football story,as the book takes you into his soul and heart as he speaks openly about his drug addiction and the dark paths it led him down. Football For Life opens up to us in depth of how powerful the game can become in our society. The writing is powerfully done so we can all relate to the struggle through Simon's eyes. From the Madchester rave days through the journey of parenthood and marriage everything is explored in detail and depth so we learn about the power of sport. "

About the author

Simon Cooper was another young lad who through fear of neglect and persecution turned his back on his families Christian beliefs for the adventures of life. As he reached his teenage years he replaced his religion with football and let his life evolve around it.

At a young age he started playing with local teams but like many did not develop the skills quick enough to be accepted as any sort of player. Feeling rejected he turned his attentions to watching his beloved Manchester City and becoming involved in the football hooligan scene which was becoming a statement and hobby for many young men in the 1980’s and 1990's.

“Football was my life and I substituted my family for it, as I wanted to be part of something that was unique and special. It seemed no football lad ever had a care in the world and the viking mentality appealed to me. I wanted to be respected and I was part of a scene that demanded respect,or so i thought”

Then one chance to manage a Sunday morning amateur football team opened his eyes and his heart to a different aspect of the game that was positive and he realised he could be part of.  The game began to educate him and give him a cure for his drug addiction as well as his weaknesses in life. Over time it moved him closer to his Christian beliefs he rejected as a teenager. "When the weekend came i had to substitute my addiction with something different than cocaine and football violence"

Football for Life is the amazing story of how football and sport can be a great tool in changing people and society and this book is a testimony to it.
